The Microtrac Vertical Crawler was originally developed for
the US Department of Energy. Incorporating three Microtracs in
a tripod formation, this vehicle is capable of horizontal and vertical
travel in pipes of 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) I.D at maximum
speeds of 20 to 30 ft (6 to 9 m) per minute, depending on
load. The control system provides steering capability, allowing
the vehicle to negotiate pipe bends and joints, and displays force
and angle feedback, which indicates pipe diameter.
The mechanical design of the Microtrac Vertical Crawler allows
it to transport a variety of testing or inspection equipment such
as a rotate & tilt color camera.
The modular nature of the Vertical Crawler, as with all Inuktun equipment,
allows additional flexibility. The Vertical Crawler can be
configured to allow easy removal of the camera and tracks for operation
as a Microspector system. By adding a second tripod stage
in series, the vehicle can transition from horizontal to vertical
pipe and between different sizes of pipe. This configuration also
allows the vehicle to travel distances of up to 600 ft / 180 m.
